Nano particles are particles between 1 and 100 nano meters in size. In nanotechnology, a particle is defined as a small object that behaves as a whole unit with respect to its transport and properties. The particles are further classified according to the diameter. The ultra filtration particles are the same as the nano-particles and between 1 and 100 manometers in size, the fine particles have a size between 100 and 2,500 nano meters and the coarse particles cover a range between 2,500 and 10,000 nano meters. Scientific research on nano-particles is intense as they have many potential applications in medicine, physics, optics and electronics. The US National Nanotechnology Initiative offers government funding focused on nano particle research.

The term "nano particle" is not usually applied to individual molecules; Generally refers to inorganic materials. The reason for the definition of nano-particles and ultra-fine particles is that during the 1970s and 1980s, when the first comprehensive fundamental studies with "nano-particles" were underway in the United States (by Granqvist and Buhrman) and Japan, (Within a project ERATO) were called "ultra-fine particles" (UFP). However, during the 1990s before the National Nanotechnology Initiative was launched in the US, the new name, "nano-particle", had become more common (for example, see the same high-author author 20 years later address the same problem,). Nano-particles can exhibit significantly different size related properties of the fine particles or bulk materials.

Nano-clusters have at least one dimension between 1 and 10 manometers and a narrow size distribution. Nano-powders are agglomerates of ultra-fine particles, nano-particles or nano-clusters. Nano-crystalline mono-crystals, or ultra-fine particles from a single domain, are often referred to as nano-crystals.
