The principle of this device is to mount a standard gear on a fixed vertical shaft and the gear to be tested on another similar shaft mounted on a similar shaft mounted on a sliding carriage, keeping the gears meshed by spring pressure. The movements of the sliding carriage when rotating the gears and indicated by a dial indicator, and these variations are a measure of any irregularity in the gear under test, alternatively a recorder can be mounted, in the form of a waxed pie chart and records made of the gear variation in the mesh accuracy.

The gears are mounted on the two mandrels, so that they can rotate freely without measurable space. The left axle can be moved along the table and held in any desired position. The slide of the right mandrel can move freely, running on steel balls, against the pressure of the spring and has a limited movement. The two mandrels can be adjusted so that their axial distance equals the distance from the center of the designed gear.

When the waxed paper recorder is installed, the table makes a revolution for each of the gears mounted on the slide carriage. As the graph moves and rotates, the plotted line records the movements of the floating car. A circle is drawn at the same time as the record, as shown in figure 12.
