Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a relatively recent addition to the bonding technology, having been developed in the early 1990s by The Welding Institute (TWI) in the United Kingdom. FSW is a solid state process that has proven to have many benefits over traditional arc welding, particularly in areas of joint quality and environmental impacts. While the level of technological preparation of aluminum FSW has reached a level where it has been employed by multiple industries, especially in the shipbuilding, transport and aerospace industries, FSW steel has not reached the same level Industrial preparation. FSW remains relatively unknown in the area of civil engineering structures. This document will provide an overview of the FSW process with a particular emphasis on current developments in the FSW steel area. Examples of joint configurations, welded materials and microstructures and resulting properties will be provided from the literature and ongoing research at the Arbegast Materials Processing and Bonding Laboratory, member of the Friction Shake Treatment Center (CFSP) , NSF Cooperative Industry / University Research Center (I / UCRC), founded by the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. In addition, paper will provide potential applications for FSW in civil engineering / structural sand. Friction stir welding (FSW) is a highly developed and newly developed bonding technology that produces a solid phase bond. It uses a rotary tool to generate heat of friction that causes the material of the components to be welded softened without reaching the melting point and allows the tool to move along the welding line. The plastified material is transferred from the leading edge to the trailing edge of the tool probe, leaving a solid phase bond between the two parts. Friction welding: from the basics to the applications, reviews the fundamentals of the process and how it is used in industrial applications.

The first part deals with general issues with chapters on basic aspects of the process, material deformation and joint formation in friction welding, quality inspection and control and the requirements of friction welding equipment and descriptions of machinery as well Such as industrial applications of friction welding. A chapter giving a perspective on the future of friction welding is included in the first part. The second part reviews the friction welding variables, including the residual stresses in friction welding, effects and defects of the friction welds, modeling thermal properties in friction welding and metallurgy and welding.
