The PAO DSC (ORs) maintains Jawans payment accounts from the Defense Security Corps (DSC). The total number of IRLAs maintained in the PAO is approximately 47,900. The office operates under CDA Chennai and is headed by ACDA / SAO Incharge and backed by 4 SAOs / AOs, 21 AAOs / SOs (A) and 129 SA / Aud / Clerks. The PAO has 12 Ledger groups.
Controller of Defense Accounts, Chennai is a unique organization in the Department of Defense Accounts to have responsibility for a regional regulator, a regulator of other ranks, a pension disbursement regulator and a governor of the training.
After the reorganisation of the whole department on October 1, 1951, the Comptroller of Military Accounts was baptised as Accountant of Defense Accounts. In 1966 the Southern CDA (ORs) was changed from Mysore to Madras. The role and function of CDA (ORs) South, then Madras, was in the handling of the payment function of JCOs and RUP.
Later, in January 1988, the CDA Offices were exchanged in Bangalore and Madras, whereby the CDA's role in Madras became that of the Regional Controller. In 1989 the administrative control of all 11 DPDO in South India along with the ZO (PD), Madras moved to the CDA Chennai and the pension to more than 1.11 lakh Pensioners of the South defense of the India is disbursed through these DPDOs until today.
In the reorganization of the Department of 1995, the PAOs located within the control of the Regional Controller were merged with the configuration of the Regional Controller. Consequently, the control of the two PAOs namely PAO (OR) DSC, Kannur and PAO (OR) MRC, Wellington moved to CDA Chennai.
The Regional Study Center (mandated to provide training in functional areas such as pensions and also to emerge as a launch pad for computer-based training packages and distance education packages) was approved in 1997 and formally emerged in April 1998 . CDA Chennai has 54 sub offices spread across 19 locations in the four southern states.
