The company chosen by me for organization study and project is South India Paper mill.This report has two parts. The first part consists of Organizational Study of South India Paper mill and second part consists study on “Absenteeism of workmen in South India Paper mill”. This internship report is an effort of mine for the fulfillment of the same. I
have opted South India Paper mill, Nanjangud for my internship. Reason for selecting this
organization is to know more about the Strategy, Structure and Function of the organization. South India Paper mill is a reputed Paper Mill in India. It has over the years, acquired a strong reputation.
First part, the organization study was an effort towards understanding the organization and its policies and structure of South India Paper mill industry. The methodology adapted for the study was observation and direct interview. Various departments were visited and data was collected about the structure and functioning of each department and
the organization. The overall organization structure was studied along with the functioning of various department such as human resources, administration, marketing, finance and production department.
Second Part contains a study on “Absenteeism of workmen in South India Paper mill”. In South India Paper mill the Absenteeism rate was high so the management decided to give me the research on this regard. So a research was done on absenteeism by interviewing and analyzing the data.
INDUSTRY PROFILE
Introduction
Paper has evolved over the years from just a writing surface to a material that touches nearly every aspect of our lives. Although we frequently take it for granted, its hard to imagine what our lives might be like without it. Paper is an essential part of our lives and satisfies many human needs we use it store and communicate information like newspapers, books, documents, and we also use paper for cultural and artistic purposes and to transport and protect goods and also packing.
The new millennium is going to be the millennium of the knowledge. So demand for paper would go on increasing in times to come. In view of paper industries strategic role for the society and also for the overall industrial growth it is necessary that the paper industry performs well
The paper industry occupies an important place, as paper can be put to many uses it contributes a lot not only to economic development but also to cultural development. The spread of education and literacy is bound to increase demand for paper.
Origin of paper industry
The word paper derived from the French word "papyrus" and a substance composed of fibers interlaced into a compact web which can then be macerated in to pulp and dried and pressed. Today, paper includes a wide range of products with very different application: communication, cultural, educational, artistic, hygienic and sanitary, as well as for storage and transportation of goods. The art of making paper was first discovered in China, 2nd century B.C. from there
it traveled slowly towards Europe. The end of 14th century gave birth to the existence so a number of paper mills in Italy, France and Germany.
The notion of paper being used as a practical everyday item did not occur until the 15th century when “Johan Gutenberg” perfected movable type and printed his famous bible in 1456; he not only spread the word of Christianity, but also sparked a revolution in mass communication. The birth of the modern paper and printing industry is commonly marked from this date.
Paper in India
The Chinese prisoners of war, brought paper to Samarkand after the battle of Atlakh near Talas who first introduced (AD 751) the technique of papermaking from linen, flax or hemp rags based on methods used in China. In India, the first paper industry was developed in Kashmir, established by Sultan Zainul Abedin (Shahi Khan) of Kashmir in 1417-67 AD. In 1837, Dr. Charley established a paper mill at Scampore in West Bengal , unfortunately it was closed in a few years . In 1867, the Royal paper mill was setup in Bally,West Bengal. Soon after Titagpur paper mills was established at Calcutta . The opening of the Deccan paper mills at Pune and the Bengal paper mills at Ramganj in 1887 and in 1889 followed this respectively. In 1925, Bamboo Paper Industry (Protection) Act and in 1931, Indian Finance (Supplementary and Extending) Act came into existence which provided the protection, and some more mills appeared on the scene. Rohtas Industries Ltd., Dalmianagar; Orient
Paper Mills, Brajraj Nagar; Mysore Paper Mills Ltd., Bhadravati; Star Paper Mills Ltd., Saharanpur; and Sirpur Paper Mills, Kagajnagar, Sirpur; were set up just before the outbreak of the Second World War. Indian paper Industry made remarkable progress during the war period.
In 1925, Punjab Paper Mills was started with an annual capacity of 6000 tons. By 1930-1931, the total capacity of paper production in India was increased to 45,600 tons as against 33,000 tons in 1925. The share of indigenous production in national consumption was now 71 % as against 54% in 1925. During the period of planned development the paper industry made rapid progress under Government of India. The production of paper rose from 350000 tons in December 1960 to 24.52 lakh tons in year 2002.
Present status of paper industry
The pulp and paper industry is one of India's core sector industries.At present there are 540 paper mills in India, with 300000 people working in the industry. Twenty eight mills are forest-based, occupying 37 percent of total production capacity whereas 242 mills, i.e. 32 percent, are based on wastepaper and 130 units, i.e. 31 percent, are based on agro residues. wood In addition to the above, over 1 million tons per year are
produced in the unorganized small sector using wastepaper. The country is almost self sufficient in manufacture of most varieties of paper and paperboards. To meet the part of its raw material needs the industry has to rely on imported wood pulp and waste paper. Production of paper & paperboard during the year is 24.52 lakh tons. At present
about 60.8 percent of the total production is based on non – wood raw material and 39.2 percent based on The operating capacity of the running units isn the range of 90 percent. Most of the mills
in the forest-based sector had utilization beyond 95 percent.
About 140000 tons of paper was exported in 2000-2001 mainly to the neighboring countries. India’s per capita consumption of paper is around 4.00 kg, which is one of the lowest in the world.The demand for up stream market of paper products , like, tissue paper , tea bags , filter paper , light weight online coated paper , medical grade coated
paper etc , is growing up .Indian paper industry needs the following for being globally more competitive ,
i. Sustained availability of good quality of raw materials and bulk
import of waste paper to supplement the availability of raw
materials.
ii. Adequate modernization of the manufacturing assets.
iii. Improvement of the infrastructure.
iv. Quality improvement and reduction in cost of production.
Import policy conducive for import of material , equipment , instruments
,raw materials & technologies which are bearing of the quality & environment .The challenge for the paper industry to meet the ever increasing demand of paper board and news print crippled due to shortage of fibers in the country. The present demand for paper
is 5.6 million tons. Even though increase in demand is at the rate of around 7 to 8% some Indian paper mills are incurring continuous losses in recent year because of the following reasons:-
1. Government regulation and increase in tax rates.
2. Scarce availability of raw materials.
3. Changes in technology.
4. Very stiff competition
FUTURE PROSPECTUS OF PAPER INDUSTRY:-
India paper market has put our industry on par with the latest technology. Some assumptions have to be made regarding the rates of change of these determinant demand predictions vulnerable to these assumptions being realistic and correct.
