Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a modulation technique that is now used in most new and emerging wireless and broadband communication systems because it is an effective solution to inter-symbol interference caused by a channel dispersive. Recently, research has shown that OFDM is also a promising technology for optical communications, although its application in real optical systems is still under study. This work simulates an optical OFDM transmission in a scenario created through Virtual Photonics Integrated (VPI), which allows the design of many configurations with respect to optical communications. Programming of the OFDM encoder and decoder has been done with Matlab software and custom modules have been created in VPI to perform the functions implemented in the codes. Before explaining the basic theoretical concepts of OFDM and the requirements involved by their adaptation to the optical field, together with a brief description of the main VPI modules that have been used in the simulations.
