In computing an applet is any small application that performs a specific task that runs within the scope of a dedicated widget engine or a larger program, often as a complement. The term is often used to refer to a Java applet, a program written in the Java programming language that is designed to be located on a web page. The applets are typical examples of transient and auxiliary applications that do not monopolise the user's attention. Applets are not full-featured applications programs, and are meant to be easily accessible.

A Java applet is a small application that is written in the Java programming language or another programming language that is compiled in Java bytecode and delivered to users in the form of a Java bytecode. The user starts the Java applet from a web page, and the applet runs inside a Java virtual machine (JVM) in a separate process from the web browser. A Java applet can appear in a frame of the web page, a new application window, Sun's Applet Viewer or a separate tool to test applets. Java applets were introduced in the first version of the Java language, which was launched in 1995.

Java applets are usually written in Java, but you can also use other languages such as Jython, JRuby, Pascal, Scala or Eiffel (through SmartEiffel). Java applets run at very fast speeds and, until 2011, they were much faster than JavaScript. Unlike JavaScript, Java applets had access to 3D hardware acceleration, which made them suitable for non-trivial visualizations and that required a large amount of calculations. As browsers have gained support for hardware accelerated graphics thanks to canvas (or specifically WebGL in the case of 3D graphics), as well as to JavaScript compiled just in time, the speed difference has become less noticeable. As the Java bytecode is cross-platform (or independent platform), browsers (or other clients) can run Java applets for many platforms, including Microsoft Windows, FreeBSD, Unix, macOS and Linux.
