Around 95 students of 3rd year B.E Civil Engineering program along with HOD Dr. Ramakrishna Hegde and Faculty Members carried out “Extensive Survey Project” for about 2 weeks in the month of January 2015. In the first stage, the surveying works related to road construction, new tank construction and water supply projects were carried out at Chelar Village in Surathkal from 6th Jan to 14th Jan 2014. In the second stage, the old tank project was carried out at Anekere Tank at Isluru in Sirsi and at Dharma River area in Hanagal Taluk on 16th, 17th and 18th January 2014. Students carried out different survey practices related to contours, capacity of reservoir area, cross section of bund, canal, catchment area, different types of weirs, spillways, etc.

At Sirsi, the survey project camp was inaugurated at Lions Education Society Auditorium in association with Lions Education Society Sirsi. Sri M M Bhat – Hon’ble Secretary of Lions Education Society presided over the function. Sri Prabhakar S Hegde – President of Lions Club Sirsi, Er Sri Shyamsundar M Bhat – Vice President of Lions Club Sirsi & Class One PWD Contractor, and Er Sri B N Bhat – Asst Executive Engineer of Public Works, Ports & Inland Water Transport, Sirsi Sub-Division were the Guests of honour of the inaugural function. Shrinath Rao, Associate Professor, Dept. of Civil Engg welcomed the dignitaries on & off the dais, and was the master of ceremony of the inaugural function. Civil engineering students found this survey project camp very useful. They carried out the survey and collected detailed information of minor and major irrigation structures, massive ogee weir (spillway), catchment area, earthen bund, canal, protection of slopes, etc. These types of irrigation structures are not to be seen along coastal Karnataka region.

On the way to Sirsi, the students and faculty members visited Yana Village at Sirsi and Utsav Rock Garden at Bankapura. On the way to Hanagal, students had trekking for about 3 kms and visited the historical place "Yana" in Uttar Kannada District. Yana is famous for its two massive rock outcrops known as the Bhairaveshwara Shikhara (around 390 feet in height) and Mohini Shikhara (around 300 feet in height). Dr. Nagaraj, Geologist and senior faculty member of the department explained the students regarding the geological details of rock formation which are composed of solid black, crystalline karst limestone, more than millions of years old, a real geological marvel.
