Biometrics (or biometric authentication) refers to the process of identifying humans by their characteristics or traits. Biometrics is used in computer science as a form of identification and access control which is one of the safest methods to maintain the privacy of humans. Biometric can be classified into two categories: behavioral (signature verification, keystroke dynamics, etc.) and physiological (iris characteristics, fingerprint, etc.). The handwritten signature is one of the first biometrics to be used before the arrival of computers. Offline signature verification is an authentication method that uses the dynamics of a person's signature handwriting and analyzes the physical activity of the signature. The core of a biometric signature system is behavioral, and in this article we have proposed a system of verification and recognition of off-line signatures using the pixel matching technique. PMT (Pixel Matching Technique) is used to verify the signature of the user with the sample signature that is stored in the database. The performance of the proposed method has been compared with the current back-propagation method of the Artificial Neural Network and the Support Vector Machine (SVM) technique.
The signature is one of the most popular and legally accepted biometrics used in the identification of people. Depending on the data acquisition mechanism, there are two signature verification methods: online or dynamic and offline or static. Online method requires a special set of devices and instruments to capture the movements of the pen and pressure on the paper at the same time of writing. On the other hand, the offline approach uses an optical scanner to obtain the signature in order to obtain a digital representation composed of M × N pixels. In the offline signature verification, the signature image is considered as a discrete 2D function f (x, y), where x = 0, 1, 2, ..., M and y = 0, 1, 2, .. .,. N denote the spatial coordinates. The value of f in any (x, y) corresponds to the gray level at that point. Processing is performed on the scanned images.
