Nuclear engineering

is the application of the breakdown of atomic nuclei and/or other sub-atomic physics, based on the principles of nuclear physics. It includes, but is not limited to, the interaction and maintenance of nuclear fission systems and components specifically, nuclear reactors, nuclear power plants, and/or nuclear weapons. The field may also include the study of nuclear fusion, medical and other applications of (generally ionizing) radiation, nuclear safety, heat/thermodynamics transport, nuclear fuel and/or other related (e.g., waste disposal) technology, nuclear proliferation, and the effect of radioactive waste or radioactivity in the environment.

Prospect of Nuclear Engineering in India:
India is in the middle of the biggest expansion of nuclear power in its history, adding 20 GWe in the next 14 years in the form of pressure water reactors and fast breeder reactors. At the same time, the United States is overturning decades of policy in order to resume the export of nuclear materials to India, opening up the possibility of private investors in the Indian nuclear industry for the first time. This is a period of progress and turmoil in India's nuclear power program. This thesis seeks to describe and analyze India's nuclear prospects and to qualitatively assess the system's strengths and weaknesses. Using the inception of the country's nuclear power program as a starting point, this thesis will trace India's nuclear lineage to the present. In the process, it will evaluate what makes the Indian program unique, and why it may not be ideal for India that the United States is finally renewing its offers of a cooperative nuclear alliance

Educational Scope in Nuclear Engineering:
This is one field of Engineering which everyone thinks has no scope but it is actually the field which might produce the maximum number of jobs in future. The best part is that you do not have to be nuclear engineering graduate to start your career in the field of nuclear engineering moreover, you can do masters from most of the universities in US even if your major in undergrad was something else like Physics or electrical engineering(as long as it is related to some science field).

History of Nuclear Physics

1907 Ernest Rutherford published "Radiation of the α Particle from Radium in passing through Matter" In 1911-2 Rutherford went before the Royal Society to explain the experiments and propound the new theory of the atomic nucleus

Dmitri Ivanenko suggested that neutrons were in fact spin 1/2 particles and that the nucleus contained neutrons to explain the mass not due to protons, and that there were no electrons in the nucleus-- only protons and neutrons

In 1935 Hideki Yukawa proposed the first significant theory of the strong force to explain how the nucleus holds together

The study of the strong and weak nuclear forces (the latter explained by Enrico Fermi via Fermi's interaction in 1934) led physicists to collide nuclei and electrons at ever higher energies. This research became the science of particle physics, the crown jewel of which is the standard model of particle physics which unifies the strong, weak, and electromagnetic forces.
