Labview and Internet Based Remote Water Level Control Laboratory

Abstract
A Labview and internet based water level control
system is developed, which enables the students, who
study automatic control, the deeper understanding of
the control theory and the real experiences on control
system design and implementation. The system will
enable the students to do the experiment in their free
time through internet with a remote computer. The
system is of low cost and can also save the course hours
for experimentation.

1. Introduction
Automatic control is a useful tool in many fields and it
is also learned by the students in majors of
biotechnology, food engineering and chemical
engineering et al., besides the automation related majors
in some universities. Automatic control laboratory is
needed for the students to have a deeper and more
complete understanding of control system design and
implementation, but it will be of high cost and need
more hours of course time. In order to lower the cost
and save the course time, an internet based water level
control system will be constructed, which will enable
the students to conduct the control experiment at any
time using a remote computer that is connected to the
internet.
2. Water level control system
The water level control system to control the water
level of tank 1 is shown in Figure 1. The water in tank1
is pumped out to tank 2 by pump 2 at a constant flow
rate to act as the disturbance. The water in tank 2 is
pumped into tank 1 by pump 1 to control the water
level of tank 1, and pump 1 is controlled by the control
algorithm run by the local control computer to maintain
the water level of tank 1 at the set-point.
The water level set-point of tank 1, the maximum
pumping speed of pump 1 and the pumping speed of
pump 2 can be changed by the user through the local
control computer or the remote computers before or
during the water level control process.
