Noise control within a building can be achieved by following construction techniques during the construction of a building. The techniques of construction of walls, windows, doors and floors, and the selection of appropriate building materials for better acoustic control in buildings are discussed. The discomfort of the noise inside the building increases if the structural elements of the building do not show resistance to noise either. It is found that the transmission of noise is intercepted when it passes through the walls, floors, windows, ceilings and the doors of the building.
A certain parameter must be used to compare the performance of different construction materials. One of these parameters is the sound transmission class (STC). The kind of sound transmission can be defined as the numerical value equal to the number of decibels in terms of sound reduction when it passes through a material, which is intended to have some insulating property.
This can make one understand that a high STC value implies that the material has a high insulating property. Basically it works on the influence of the external frequencies of the areas of the partition where the sound originates and where the reception of the sound takes place.
This can be explained with an example. Suppose that the desired sound level internally is 45 decibels and the external noise level is 85 decibels, then we require a partition material that has a sound transmission class value of 40 STC for adequate acoustic comfort. STC is a sound transmission class rating that is presented by the American Society of Testing and Measurement. This acts as a parameter to guide an architect to know what material would suit more, to have an essential acoustic feature by reducing noise.
