Next Generation Networks - Overview


The broad meaning of Next Generation Networking (NGN) is architectural development of network in Core and Access areas which will transport all information and services (voice, data, video etc.) in packet format. NGNs are built around Internet Protocol (IP).

DEVELOPMENT OF NGN CONCEPT

The NGN is conceived as a concrete implementation of the GII (Global Information Infrastructure).
Some important factors that have led to the development of NGN concept:
Competition among operators due to ongoing deregulation of markets
Explosion of digital traffic, e.g., increasing use of "the Internet"
Increasing demand for new multimedia services
Increasing demand for a general mobility
Convergence of networks and services, etc.



NGN Basic Reference Model (NGN BRM)


The control functions in NGN are ‘invoked’ by the end-user, hence processes belonging to control functions are also called ‘Invocation process’.
 
Management Plane: The set of functions used to manage entities in the stratum or layer under consideration, plus the functions required to support this management.
 
The transport functions reside in the transport stratum and the service functions related to applications reside in the service stratum.
