Near Field Communication (NFC) is a set of communication protocols that allow two electronic devices, one of which is usually a portable device, such as a smartphone, to establish communication at a distance of 4 cm from each other. NFC devices are used in non-contact payment systems, similar to those used in credit cards and electronic ticket cards, and allow mobile payment to replace or supplement these systems. NFC is used for social networks, to share contacts, photos, videos or files.   NFC-enabled devices can act as identity documents and electronic cards. NFC offers a low-speed connection with a simple configuration that can be used to boot up more capable wireless connections.

Similar ideas in advertising and industrial applications were generally unsuccessful commercially, surpassed by technologies such as bar codes and UHF RFID tags. NFC protocols set a generally accepted standard. When one of the connected devices has an Internet connection, the other can exchange data with online services. Portable NFC enabled devices can be provided with application software, for example to read electronic tags or make payments when connected to an NFC-compatible device. Previously, short-range communication used manufacturer-owned technology for applications such as inbound tickets, access control, and paid readers. Like other "proximity card" technologies, NFC employs electromagnetic induction between two loop antennas on NFC enabled devices, such as a smartphone and printer exchange information, operating within the available radio frequency ISM band Without a 13.56 MHz license in ISO / IEC 18000-3 at speeds between 106 and 424 kbit / s.

Each full NFC device can operate in three modes:
• NFC-enabled NFC-enabled devices, such as smartphones, act as smart cards, allowing users to perform transactions such as payment or ticketing.
• NFC-enabled devices with NFC reader / writer can read information stored on inexpensive NFC tags included in labels or smart posters.
• NFC Peer-to-peer: Allows two NFC-enabled devices to communicate with each other to exchange information on an ad hoc basis.

NFC tags are passive data stores that can be read, and under certain circumstances written to, by an NFC device. They usually contain data (from 2015 between 96 and 8,192 bytes) and are read-only in normal use, but can be rewritable. Applications include secure personal data storage (for example, debit or credit card information, loyalty program data, personal identification numbers (PIN), contacts). NFC tags can be customized by their manufacturers or use industry specifications.

Standards were provided by the NFC forum. The forum was responsible for promoting technology and establishing standards and certifying device compliance.
NFC standards cover communications protocols and data exchange formats and are based on existing RFID standards, including ISO / IEC 14443 and FeliCa standards. Standards include ISO / IEC 18092 and those defined by the NFC Forum. In addition to the NFC Forum, the GSMA group defined a platform for the deployment of GSFC NFC standards  within mobile phones. GSMA's efforts include Trusted Services Manager,  Single Wire Protocol, test / certification and secure element. 
A patent licensing program for NFC is deployed by France Brevets, a patent fund created in 2011. A free, platform-free NFC library, libnfc, is available under the GNU Lesser General Public License.
