Researchers at Rice University have developed electrodes made from carbon nanotubes grown with graphene with a very high surface and very low electrical resistance. Researchers first grow graphene on a metal substrate and then grow carbon nanotubes on the graphene sheet. Because the basis of each nano-tube is attached, atom to atom, to the graphene sheet, the structure of nano-tube-graphene is essentially a molecule with a huge surface.
MIT researchers have developed a technique for depositing aligned carbon nanotubes onto a substrate for use as an anode, and possibly the cathode, in a lithium-ion battery. Carbon nanotubes have attached organic molecules that help align the nanotubes in the substrate, as well as providing many oxygen atoms that provide points for lithium ions to adhere.
