 Nanotechnology involves the design and development of organic and inorganic materials at nanometer scale, with physical, chemical and biological properties made to measure. Widely studied application of nanotechnology includes techniques of molecular biology of genetic modification of crops.

Bacteria can form biofilms by self-assembly (for example, Curli-film formation by E. coli). The formation of aerial hyphae by bacteria and fungi and the formation of viral capsids result from the controlled assembly of nanoscale building blocks.
There is a wide range of applications of nanoscience in various areas of microbiology, such as studying and visualizing at the molecular assembly levels of a process. It facilitates the identification of patterns of molecular recognition and self-assembly, as well as the evaluation of these processes.

Nanotechnology and microbiology

(Nanowerk Spotlight) Microbiology refers to nanoscience at various levels. Many bacterial entities are nano-machines in nature, including molecular motors such as flagella and pili. Bacteria also form biofilms by the process of self-assembly (for example, formation of Curli-film by E. coli). The formation of aerial hyphae by bacteria and fungi is also directed by the controlled and orderly assembly of building blocks. In addition, virus capsid formation is a classic process of molecular recognition and nanoscale self-assembly.
Nanotechnology involves the creation and manipulation of organic and inorganic matter at the nanoscale. Promises to provide the means to design nanomaterials; Materials with personalized physical, chemical and biological properties controlled by defined molecular dynamics and structures. Current molecular biology techniques of crop genetic modification are already forms of what has been termed nanotechnology.
Nanotechnology can provide the future development of much more accurate and effective methods of manipulating food polymers and polymer assemblies to provide tailor made improvements in food quality and food safety. Nanotechnology promises not only the creation of new and precisely defined material properties, but also promises that these materials will have self-assembly, self-healing and maintenance properties.
Nanoscience has an impact in several areas of microbiology. It allows the study and visualization at the levels of molecular assembly of a process. It facilitates the identification of motifs of molecular recognition and self-assembly, as well as the evaluation of these processes. Specifically, there are three areas in which microbiologists use the techniques of nanotechnologists:
- Imaging individual molecules
- Touching and pulling nanoscale objects (laser traps, optical tweezers)
- Determination of spatial organization in live microbes (AFM, near / far field microscope).
