The University of Mumbai (informally the University of Mumbai or MU) is one of the first state universities in India and the oldest in Maharashtra.

The University of Mumbai offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees as well as diplomas and certificates in many disciplines. The language of instruction for most courses is English. The University of Mumbai has three campuses across Mumbai (Kalina Campus, Thane High Campus and Fort Campus) and one outside of Mumbai. The Fort campus only carries out administrative work. Several institutes in Mumbai formerly affiliated with the university are now autonomous institutes or universities. The University of Mumbai is one of the largest universities in the world. In 2011, the total number of students enrolled was 549,432. The University of Mumbai currently has 711 affiliated colleges.

According to the "Wood Bureau", drafted by Sir Charles Wood in 1854, the University of Bombay was established in 1857 after the submission of a request from the Bombay Association to the British colonial government in India. The University of Mumbai was modeled on similar universities in the United Kingdom, specifically the University of London.

The earliest established departments were the Faculty of Arts of Elphinstone College in 1835 and the Medical School of Grant Medical College in 1845. Both colleges existed before the university was founded and surrendered its degree award privileges to college. The first degrees awarded in 1862 were Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Medicine. Initially, the Mumbai City Council was used as the university offices.

Until 1904, the university only conducted examinations, awarded university affiliations, developed curricula, and developed guidelines for curriculum colleges. The teaching departments, research disciplines and postgraduate courses were introduced from 1904 and several additional departments were established. After India achieved independence in 1947, the functions and powers of the university were reorganized under the Law of the University of Bombay in 1953. The name of the University was changed from the University of Bombay to the University of Mumbai in 1996. In 1949, 42,272 with 80 affiliated colleges. By 1975, these numbers had grown to 156,190 and 114, respectively.
