Multi-touch interfaces are input devices that recognize two or more simultaneous taps, allowing one or more users to interact with computer applications through various gestures created by fingers on a surface. Some devices also recognize differences in pressure and temperature. Unlike a keyboard or a single-point input device, such as a mouse or a traditional touchpad, multi-touch technology introduces users to slides, tweaks, rotations and other actions that allow richer and immediate interaction with digital content . Multi-touch technology can be found not only on touchpads but also on screens, where the user manipulates icons and other content directly on a screen.
For example, with a photo application that uses multi-touch technology, users can touch and drag photos, creating a digital manipulation approach for a collection of printed photographs. The interface also allows users to "grab" the corner of a photo and rotate it or touch the opposite corners of the image and resize it by separating their separate fingers or pinching together. Multi-touch interfaces recognize these and other gestures from multiple device locations simultaneously, allowing multiple users to interact with one application at a time. The use of touch screen technology to control electronic devices before multi-touch technology and personal computer. Early builders of synthesizers and electronic instruments like Hugh Le Caine and Robert Moog experimented with the use of tactile capacitance sensors to control the sounds produced by their instruments. IBM began building the first touch screens in the late 1960s, and in 1972, Control Data launched the PLATO IV computer, a terminal used for educational purposes that used single-touch points on a 16x16 matrix as the user interface .
