Digital communication is very broad field and you can have n number of topics from that field. Most booming areas include cloud, IoT (Internet of Things), security and communication. Like you may work on encryption strategies as security is a major concern these days.
People are talking a lot on BigData and so there is an opportunity to secure that data. Understand how they are storing it, and what you can do make it secure.
Alternatively companies are moving to SSO and this is one area where standards are in process to update/develop. So you may look into this sector and check what are the problems in SSO communication and what protocols needs to be on places. SAML and OAuth are leading this market. However there are small players too.
IoT is all about digital communication. And in near future, things will be more based on IoT. There is huge opportunity to work on this area.
