Mahendra Singh Dhoni is an Indian cricket player who captained the Indian team in limited formats from 2007 to 2016 and in trial cricket from 2008 to 2014. A right-and-right attacker batsman and wicket-keeper is widely regarded as the best Finalists in cricket limited-overs. He made his debut at One Day International (ODI) in December 2004 against Bangladesh, and played his first test one year later against Sri Lanka.
Dhoni has numerous captaincy records, such as most of an Indian captain's victories in the tests and ODIs, and most of the consecutive victories of an Indian captain in ODIs. He took over the ODI captaincy of Rahul Dravid in 2007 and led the team to his first ODI series bilateral victory in Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Dhoni was born in Ranchi, Bihar (now in Jharkhand), and is identified as a Rajput. Its paternal village Lvali is in the Lamgarha block of Almora district of Uttarakhand. Dhoni's parents moved from Uttarakhand to Ranchi, where his father Pan Singh worked in junior management positions at MECON. Dhoni has a sister Jayanti Gupta and a brother Narendra Singh Dhoni. Dhoni studied in DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shyamali, Ranchi, Jharkhand where he initially excelled in badminton and soccer and was selected at district and club level in these sports. Dhoni was a goalkeeper on his football team and was sent to play cricket by a local cricket club by his football coach. Although he had not played cricket, Dhoni impressed with his wicket guard skills and became the regular wicketkeeper at the Commando Cricket Club (1995-1998). Based on his performance in the cricket club, he was elected to the 1997/98 season Vinoo Mankad U-16 Championship Trophy and performed well. Dhoni focused on cricket after his tenth test. Dhoni was a ticket examiner (TTE) at the Kharagpur Railway Station from 2001 to 2003, under the East South Railway in Midnapore (W), a district in West Bengal. His colleagues remember him as a very honest and direct employee of the Indian railways. But he also had a mischievous side to his personality. Once, while staying in the railroad neighbourhood, Dhoni and a couple of his friends were covered with white sheets and walked through the complex late at night.
