¢ Sound encoding where the additional
channels, beyond the standard left and right
for stereo audio, are encoded in separate
streams rather than being matrixed from a
stereo signal.
¢ The most common discrete surround formats
are the various versions of Dolby Digital and
DTS.

The multi-channel sound is matrix-encoded
into a two-channel stereo downmix signal by
using fixed calculation rules.
Common in Home theatre systems
Leads to an imprecise spatial sound image and
therefore a limited audio quality
