internship for eee students in bhel bangalore

BHEL is one of the largest government organizations in India, which is into energy production and infrastructure. The head office is located in Bhopal. It caters the need of the core sector of the Indian economy such as power generation and transmission, Transportation and telecommunication.Just that you know, it is into manufacturing of products like Hydro, Steam, Marine and Nuclear Turbines, Heat exchanger and Hydro and Turbo generator, Switchgears, Control gears, Capacitors, Rectifiers, Oil drilling and Diesel generators. The blocks are allotted to the trainee by the Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC) on the day they report to the centre.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, established in 1964, is one of the Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprises of India. It deals with the sectors of Power, Transmission, Industry, Transportation, Renewable energy, Oil & Gas and Defence.

Who are eligible to apply?

Students from 4th and 6th semester of engineering (Electrical, Electronics, Civil, Computer Science/IT, Mechanical, Metallurgy) can apply in BHEL through their college’s Training and Placement Office.

How to apply?

Students need to fill the training form available in their college and address it to the General Manager of the Human Resource Development Centre at the BHEL office they wish to intern in. BHEL doesn’t entertain personal applications unless you have a strong contact in there. The whole process of hiring interns is subject to availability of mentors/guides and is not quite transparent. Students have to pay approximately 500 INR per week for the internship.

What after applying?

There is no fixed interview process at BHEL. Interns who get in through contacts generally do not require any sort of screening. Some interns get interviewed through telephone and a few are asked just to provide a letter of recommendation by an employee of BHEL. Sample questions which might be asked in the telephonic interview are-

- What products does BHEL deal with?
- Which division of BHEL are you interested to work in?
- How would working in that division help your career?
- What is the most interesting subject for you in your branch?

Depending on your stream, a specific division is allotted and you’re required to visit it with the mentor assigned by BHEL. The internship can range from four to six weeks. Initially, you will be introduced to different aspects of BHEL which are related to the division assigned. In the subsequent weeks, you will be given a project and at the end of the internship, evaluation will be done on the basis of the project report. A few questions are asked by the HR department while the evaluation, like-

- What was your project about?
- Specifics about the project report.

Apart from the project, mentors constantly give assignments to be completed, but that depends completely on the mentor.

Word of advice from ex-interns :-

Mentors matter- How much you learn during your internship would depend a lot on your mentor. You can always self-learn, but only a mentor can give you detailed insight of the division. So it would be better if you try making some contacts at BHEL and work under the guidance of a known employee.

Worth it, even though not a hands-on experience- The projects given involve application of the knowledge gained during the internship, but are not exactly part of anything on-going at BHEL. For example, an intern from electronics branch was asked to develop an algorithm for the functioning of a coffee machine. But at the end of the internship you would have a sound idea of how things related to your field function and are made to work.

Conducive environment for learning- The mentors at most BHEL branches are very experienced and guide well. They are more than happy to help if they feel that you are putting efforts in learning. Else, they don’t exactly get paid anything extra for mentoring, so do not expect them to look out for you.

Word of caution- BHEL is a manufacturing plant. Accordingly, the working conditions are very rough. This is especially true for the Civil, Mechanical and Metallurgy engineers. Do not expect to be sitting in an air conditioned office.

Even though doing an internship at BHEL requires paying a fee, the experience gained is completely worth it. Read Namesh’s experience of summer internship at BHEL and judge for yourself.

Editor’s note- The information is based on the interviews of certain ex-interns of the company. Readers are advised to go through the BHEL Recruitment website or contact the BHEL office for latest information. We would like to thank Sneha Mula, Osmai Aravind and Itti Chopra and for their valuable inputs.
