A monolithic dome (from the Greek mono- and -lítico, that means "a stone") is a structure fused in a form of a single piece. The form may be permanent or temporary and may or may not remain part of the completed structure. Monolithic domes are a form of monolithic architecture.

History

The igloo may be the earliest form of the monolithic dome. Although built of blocks of compressed snow, these blocks melt and refreeze to form a strong and homogeneous structure. The dome shape of the igloo presents the two main advantages of a dome-shaped structure: high strength and good insulation. The first modern monolithic dome structure was built in Provo, Utah and opened in 1963 as an ice skating rink. After its 1967 conversion into a general store by new owner Paul Ream, the building remained until it was demolished in 2006 for new construction. Turtle Reams was constructed by creating a pile of dirt in the desired shape of the shell, an ellipsoidal Section 240 feet (73 m) long, 160 feet (49 m) wide and 40 feet (12 m) tall. The mound was then covered with a grid of reinforcing bars, to provide strength, and a concrete layer approximately 4 inches (100 mm) thick. After the concrete was cured, the earth was dug through the doors, leaving the roof in place. Then the floor was poured to finish the structure.
Today, monolithic domes are used in a variety of residential, commercial and industrial projects. Due to strength, durability and economy, they are used to store large quantities of various products in the cement, fertilizer, agriculture, energy and mining industries. Due to their structural integrity, they are used as containment buildings in some nuclear power plants. The shapes have been made using almost all common structural materials, including fabric with air pressure.

The monolithic domes are built following a method that requires a sturdy, inflatable Air form, reinforced steel concrete and a polyurethane foam insulation. Each of these ingredients is used in a technologically specific way. Our domes can be designed to fit any architectural need: homes, cottages, churches, schools, gyms, arenas and stadiums, bulk warehouses, owner's homes and various other private or public facilities. Monolithic Domes Meets FEMA Standards to Provide Almost absolute protection and have a proven ability to survive tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, most disasters caused by man, fire, termites and rot. They are profitable,. Most importantly, a monolithic dome uses about 50% less energy to heat and cool than a conventionally built conventionally sized building. Beginning in 1970, monolithic domes have been built and are in use in virtually every American state and in Canada, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. Monolithic domes are not restricted by climate or location site. In terms of energy consumption, durability, resistance to disasters and maintenance, monolithic domes work well in any climate, even in extremely hot or cold areas. And they can be built almost anywhere: in the mountains, on the beaches, even underground or underwater.
