An electric locomotive is an overhead power locomotive, a third rail, or an onboard energy storage, such as a battery or a fuel cell. Electric locomotives with on-board primary motors, such as diesel engines or gas turbines, are classified as diesel-electric or gas-electric turbine locomotives because the combination of electric / motor generator serves only as a power transmission system . Electricity is used to remove smoke and take advantage of the high efficiency of electric motors, but the cost of electrification means that usually only heavily used lines can be electrified.
Types of electric locomotives
An electric locomotive can be supplied with
• Rechargeable energy storage systems, such as battery powered locomotives or ultracapacitors.
• A stationary source, such as a third lane or overhead cable.
A diesel-electric combines a diesel engine on board with a transmission or storage system of electric power (battery, ultracapacitor).
The distinctive design features of electric locomotives are:
• The type of electric power used, AC or DC.
• The method of storage (batteries, ultracapacitors) or collection (transmission) of electrical energy.
• The means used to couple the drive motors to the drive wheels (drivers).
