Abstract
MASC stands for Mobile Autonomous Solar Collector. MASC is a combination of sensors, analog
converters, motors and microcontrollers that enables automatic collection of solar energy via solar
panels without the involvement of human beings. MASC can be adopted in small scale domestic
applications and large scale industrial applications; scale of application is identified depending on the
net solar panel area. Here the panels are made mobile by placing them on the MASC in which
automaticity is achieved with the help of proximity sensors, light sensors, ADCs, motors and
microcontroller. The sensors gather the data which are provided to the ADCs based on these inputs the
microcontroller produces an output that is compared with a predefined baseline value. Then
microcontroller provides the necessary outputs which in turn drive the motors thus physically moving the
panels from one point to another for maximum solar energy output. Thus the net efficiency increases. In
industrial applications as the net panel area is quite large it is difficult to move an entire panel
physically. Therefore the panels are made to tilt in an angle using the circuitry mentioned above Thus
MASC enables the collection of solar power, which can be stored in batteries for domestic and industrial
use, without any human involvement in the collection or storage process. Unlike an idle solar panel,
MASC increases the net solar power efficiency which can lead to reduced dependence on fossil fuel
based electricity generation thereby contributing to the concept of the ‘green planet’.

Introduction
Solar energy has been harnessed by humans since
ancient times using a range of ever-evolving
technologies. Nowadays only a minuscule fraction of
the available solar energy is used. This is where the
significance of MASC comes in. MASC- Increases
the net solar power efficiency which can lead to
reduced dependence on fossil fuels.

MASC
MASC stands for Mobile Autonomous Solar
Collector. It is a combination of sensors, ADC, DAC,
motors and microcontrollers. It enables automatic
collection of solar energy via solar panels without the
involvement of human beings

Flow Chart
The basic flow diagram model of MASC is:
Sensors
In MASC two types of sensors are used they are
Proximity sensors and sunlight sensors. Proximity
sensors, helps in determining the direction of
motion.Sunlight sensors, help in identifying the
regions with maximum sunlight.
Microcontroller
Microcontroller is the brain of the system. It receives
the information from the sensors. This information is
combined with efficiency enhancer logic. Based on
these computations, microcontroller gives the driving
instructions to the motor.
Efficiency Enhancer Logic
Based on the outputs from the sensors, the solar
panels have to be moved so that maximum efficiency
can be obtained from the available sunlight. Solar
panels must be centered with respect to the sunlight.
This is performed using EEL. Current data from the
sensors are further analyzed with the already obtained
data to move to a new physical location. This ensures
maximum exposure to the sunlight. Thus maximum
efficiency is obtained.
Working
The sensors gather the data which are provided to the
ADCs. Based on these inputs the microcontroller
produces an output that is compared with a
predefined baseline value. Microcontroller provides
the necessary outputs by combining this with the
efficiency enhancer logic. It drives the motors, thus
physically moving the panels from one point to
another for maximum solar energy output.
Applications
Scale of application is identified depending on the net
solar panel area. In domestic applications, solar
panels are made mobile by placing them on the
MASC.In domestic applications where the sizes of
panels are relatively small and the area for light
exposure is less, the full potential of MASC can be
realized. In industrial applications, the solar panels
are made to tilt in an angle using the same circuitry

Conclusion
Unlike an idle solar panel, MASC increases the net
solar power efficiency. Thus it leads to reduced
dependence on fossil fuel based electricity
generation. Thereby it contributes to the concept of a
‘GREENER PLANET’.
