A multinational corporation (MNC) has facilities and other assets in at least one country other than its country of origin. Such companies have offices and / or factories in different countries and usually have a centralized headquarters where they coordinate the global management. Very large multinationals have budgets that exceed those of many smaller countries.
Multinational corporations are sometimes referred to as transnational corporations.
Almost all major multinationals are Americans, Japanese or Western Europeans, such as Nike, Coca-Cola, Wal-Mart, AOL, Toshiba, Honda and BMW. Defenders of multinationals say they create highly paid jobs and technologically advanced goods in countries that would otherwise not have access to such opportunities or assets. On the other hand, critics say that multinationals have undue political influence over governments, exploit developing countries and generate job losses in their own countries.
