As for the wells, the distance would depend on the details of the well pipe. If the well perforates only the deepest confined aquifer, the pipe up to the rock will be only plain pipe without any slots and so the septic tanks may be very close to the well. If the pipe is grooved to hit the water at low depths and in the case of shallow excavated wells, there must be a distance that depends on the nature of the soil at shallow depths.
If the soil is clayey and the effluent is dispersed through a dispersion trench, the distance should be at least 50 feet. If it is sand, the distance should be more. In an apartment complex in Chennai, the soil was sandy and the effluent contaminated the well even at 75 feet. Here, we diverted the water used for bathing and washing clothes to beds of plants beds of plants, the problem was solved.
