The Scottish yoke is a mechanism for converting the linear movement of a slide into rotating movement or vice versa. The piston or other alternate part is directly coupled to a sliding yoke with a groove engaging a pin in the rotating part.

The Scottish yoke (also known as a slotted linkage mechanism) is a reciprocating mechanism, which converts the linear motion of a cursor into a rotating movement, or vice versa. The piston or other alternate part is directly coupled to a sliding yoke with a groove engaging a pin in the rotating part. The position of the piston as a function of time is a sinusoidal wave of constant amplitude, and a constant frequency given a constant rotation speed.

The simple crank / slider and the Scotch yoke (called the donkey horn in Britain) are two mechanisms for transforming between rotary and linear motion. This demonstration compares the kinematics of the slip joint - the displacements, velocities and accelerations - produced by the two mechanisms as functions of the common input crank angle. The schematic of the mechanism shows the shared crank in black, the crank of the single crank mechanism in blue and the Scottish yoke superimposed in red. The kinematics of the sliding joint are plotted for a complete cycle in corresponding colors on the strip chart.
