Retaining walls are structures used to retain land or water or other materials such as coal, ore, etc. Where conditions do not allow the mass to assume its natural slope. The retention material is normally referred to as filler. The main function of retaining walls is to stabilize slopes and control erosion. When road construction is needed on rugged terrain with steep slopes, retaining walls can help reduce the qualities of roads and dirt along the road. Some road projects lack available land next to the road, which requires construction along the tip of a slope. In these cases, extensive classification may not be possible and containment walls are required to allow for safe construction and acceptable slope conditions for adjacent land uses. Where soils are unstable, slopes are quite steep, or heavy runoff is present, retaining walls help erosion of the trunk. Excessive runoff can undermine roads and structures and control sediment runoff is an important consideration of water quality and the environment in road and bridge projects. In these situations, the construction of retaining walls, instead of excessive classification, reduces the elimination of vegetation and reduces erosion caused by runoff. In turn, the vegetation serves to stabilize the soil and filter sediments and pollutants before entering the water source, thus improving water quality.
