The microprocessor is a program-controlled (IC) semiconductor device that searches, decrypts, and executes instructions. It is versatile in application and is flexible to some extent. Today, modern microprocessors can perform extremely sophisticated operations in areas such as meteorology, aviation, nuclear physics and engineering.


The microprocessor is derived from two words micro and processor. Micro means small, small and processor that processes something. It is a single large-scale integration chip (VLSI) that incorporates all the functions of the central processing unit (CPU) manufactured in a single integrated circuit (ICs). Some other units like caches, pipelining, floating point arithmetic and superscaling units are additionally present in the microprocessor and resulting in increased operating speed. 8085.806.8088 are some examples of microprocessors.

Initially Microprocessor was designed by the United States of America and BUSICOM of Japan in 1971. The first Intel 4004 microprocessor was a 4-bit P type metal oxide (PMOS) semi-conductor microprocessor. Intel introduced two 8-bit 8008 microprocessors in the year 1972 and 8080 in 1973.2 and one was the most popular microprocessor of the 1970s. 8080 was an NMOS microprocessor. NMOS microprocessor is popular that BOSOS NMOS technology is faster and provide higher density than PMOS. The improved version of 8080 was 8085 . The 8085 microprocessor was introduced by Intel in 1977 . The Intel 8080 clock and controller were on separate chip and used two separate power supplies. So 8080 was not a complete CPU on a single chip. But Intel 8085 has its own clock and control circuit manufactured on a single chip . The model number "5" comes from the fact that the Intel 8085 only needs a +5 volt (V) power supply using the depletion mode of the transistors. This type of chip requires a minimum of external drives such as RAM, ROM, 8-bit locks, etc. .
