Mahatma Gandhi University is a public university related to the state of India. It was established in Gandhi Jayanti, on October 2, 1983 in the Kottayam district in Kerala, India. [2] Mahatma Gandhi University (formerly Gandhiji University), has been approved by UGC and accredited (A) by the National Council of Evaluation and Accreditation of India. The university has around 300 affiliated universities distributed in five districts in the center of Kerala.

Also known as MG University, and abbreviated as MGU the university has grown to become one of the 50 best universities in India, classified by India Today magazine. MGU is the only university in South India selected for the Obama-Singh 21st Century Knowledge Initiative established by the US governments. US-India for institutional association scholarships. This created MGU to form a partnership with Brown University, Duke University and Plymouth State University in the USA.

The University Grants Commission of India does not believe that the names of Indian universities are unique, so in 2007 another Mahatma Gandhi State University was established in Andhra Pradesh (now in the newly formed state of Telangana) and received recognition from UGC. The old Mahatma Gandhi University in Kerala did not question the decision. Similarly, another private university called Mahatma Gandhi University was also established through the Meghalaya State legislative act, 2010 in Meghalaya and followed by the same private universities appointed by Uttarakhand State in 2007 and the states of Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh are also more recent in this list.
