A large number of electronic equipment are being used in hospitals for patient care and diagnosis or to perform advanced surgeries.

This book is intended as an introductory text for students of Engineering and Applied Sciences to the medical applications of electronics. A course has been offered for many years in Cardiff in this area, both in this College and its predecessor institution. A new group was created, the Medical Systems Engineering Research Unit, after the reorganization of the College. The restructuring and revision of the material of our course and the responsibility of teaching this course within the new group led to the search for new materials. While we have found a number of available texts that are appropriate for the aspects of our new course, we find the need for a text that covers a wide range of material that would be beneficial for students completing their degree programs and contemplating professional participation In Electronic medicine.

Medical electronics is a broad field. While much of the material that a medical application participant must acquire is the conventional base of electronics covered by any electronics student, there are areas of special emphasis. Many of them emerge from areas that are increasingly inaccessible to students who necessarily specialize in an early stage of their education.

The need for diversity is reflected in the training and experience of the authors. Between us there is a doctor who is also a mechanical engineer, a physicist now working as a software engineer, an electronic engineer who made the same move, and another electronic engineer with some experimental experience in orthopedics. The material that this book tries to cover begins with an Introduction that we hope to provide some perspective in the thematic area. The following chapter offers an introduction to human anatomy and physiology. The approach taken here is necessarily simplified: it is our intention to provide an adequate foundation for the material in the following chapters, both in its basic science and in nomenclature which may be unknown to readers with elementary biological knowledge.

Chapter three describes Physics used in diagnostic techniques. This covers the physics of basic radiation, magnetic resonance and nature and generation of ultrasound. Chapter 4 discusses the form of some of the basic electronic elements used in medical applications. We describe the specialized techniques that are used and characterize the signals that are likely to be found. Particular emphasis is placed on patient safety issues, although they are discussed further in Chapter 8. Chapter 5 deals with the mathematical background of image processing. This material has been separated from our description of the representative diagnostic imaging technologies presented in Chapter 6. This last chapter includes material provided by Toshiba Medical Systems, whose assistance we acknowledge with gratitude.

Chapter 7 contains reference material on computers, their architecture, application for data acquisition and connection to networks. It also covers some aspects of the application of databases and expert systems to medicine that have long been expected to play a central role in patient care. The increasing capacity of systems, along with their continued cost reductions, means that their introduction is becoming a reality. The introductory parts of this chapter will be known by many engineers: we have included it to ensure that this book has a fairly broad sphere of interest.

Finally, Chapter 8 examines aspects of patient safety that are of interest to engineers. This area is particularly difficult as it is closely related to the evolution of legislation. We seek to present here the principles and what we believe to be good practices: these should form the basis of any activity of the competent engineer. This book has spent some time in gestation. We want to recognize the patience of our families, without whom without doubt the task would have been completed more quickly. We have also been assisted largely by students and researchers from the Research Unit in Medical Systems Engineering who have provided constructive criticism and helped by revising manuscripts.
