Now is the time to take a look at an application of second order differential equations. Let's take a look at the mechanical vibrations. In particular, we are going to see a mass hanging from a spring.
Vibrations can occur in virtually every branch of engineering, so what we're going to do here can be easily adapted to other situations, usually with just a change in notation.
We are going to configure the situation. Let's start with a spring of length l, called natural length, and let's hook an object with mass m to it. When the object is attached to the spring, the spring will extend to a length of L. We will call the equilibrium position the position of the object's center of gravity, since it hangs from the spring without movement.
