Mechanical vibration is defined as the measurement of a periodic process of oscillations with respect to an equilibrium point. This book should provide essential concepts that involve vibration analysis, uncertainty modeling, and vibration control. It should also provide a good foundation in computational results, mathematical modeling, and performance evaluation of different systems and system components. Attention will be given to vibrating systems such as beams, ropes, plates and membranes, vibration isolation, critical speeds, the balance of rotary and alternative machinery. The basic principles of control theory will be presented from feedback control systems.
Now is the time to take a look at an application of second-order differential equations. Let's take a look at the mechanical vibrations. In particular, let's look at a dough that is hanging from a fountain.
Vibrations can occur in almost every branch of engineering and what we are going to do here can easily be adapted to other situations, usually with just a change in notation.
Let's set the situation. Let's start with a spring of length l, called natural length, and we are going to hook an object with mass m to it. When the object is attached to the spring, the spring will stretch a length of L. We will call the position of equilibrium the position of the center of gravity for the object, as it hangs on the spring without movement.
Below is the spring sketch with and without the object attached to it.
