A cat is a device that uses force to lift heavy loads. The primary mechanism with which force is applied varies, depending on the specific type of jack, but is typically a thread or hydraulic cylinder. Cats can be classified according to the type of force they use: mechanical or hydraulic. Mechanical jacks, such as car jacks and house jacks, lift heavy equipment and are rated for lifting capacity (for example, the number of tons they can lift). Hydraulic lathes are more resilient and can lift heavier loads and include jack and floor jacks.

HYDRAULIC JACKS depend on the force generated by the pressure. Essentially, if two cylinders (one big and one small) are connected and force is applied to a cylinder, equal pressure is generated in both cylinders. However, because a cylinder has a larger area, the force produced by the larger cylinder will be higher, although the pressure in the two cylinders will remain the same. Hydraulic jacks depend on this basic principle for lifting heavy loads: they use pump pistons to move the oil through two cylinders. The plunger is drawn first backwards, which opens the ball of the suction valve inside and draws the oil into the pump chamber. As the plunger is pushed forward, the oil moves through an external discharge check valve inside the cylinder chamber, and the suction valve closes, which results in the construction of pressure inside the cylinder. cylinder.

In 1851, inventor Richard Dudgeon received a patent for a "portable hydraulic press" - the hydraulic jack, a cat that turned out to be far superior to the bolts of the screws in use at the time.

Hydraulic jacks are typically used for shop work, rather than as emergency cat to be carried with the vehicle. The use of cats not designed for a specific vehicle requires more than the usual care in the selection of soil conditions, the point of elevation in a vehicle and to ensure stability when the cat extends. Hydraulic jacks are often used to lift lifts in low and medium height buildings.

A hydraulic jack uses a liquid, which is incompressible, which is forced into a cylinder by a pump plunger. The oil is used since it is self lubricating and stable. When the plunger pulls back, draw the oil from the reservoir through a suction check valve in the pump chamber. When the plunger moves forward, it pushes the oil through a discharge check valve on the cylinder. The ball of the suction valve is inside the chamber and opens with each withdrawal of the plunger. The ball of the discharge valve is outside the chamber and opens when the oil is pushed into the cylinder. At this point, the suction ball inside the chamber is forced shut and oil pressure is formed in the cylinder.

In a floor jack (also known as 'chariot'), a horizontal piston pushes the short end of a lever, with the long arm providing vertical movement to a lifting pad, held horizontal with a horizontal link. Floor jacks usually include wheels and wheels, which compensates for the arc taken by the lifting platform. This mechanism provides a low profile when it collapses, for an easy maneuver under the vehicle, allowing a considerable extension.
