Abstract
An epicyclic gear train comprises support spindles for the planet or star wheels cantilevered from a single support flange. The cross sections of the spindles vary with distance from the support plate so that under tangential loading the bearing surfaces of the spindles will assume a position essentially parallel to the axis of the gear train.

This thesis attempts to present a technique for finding a total speed and force solution to an epicyclic gear train in the most general case possible.Finally, the solution technique and design aids presented will be used to address the practicality of using planetary gear trains as a power coupling element in a new generation of tandem bicycles.The design of a bicycle for two persons where both of them can pedal simultaneously is also discussed.The planetary system accommodates differences in speed and power input by the two riders. The nature of the system behavior is the focus of this thesis..
