A robust algorithm is proposed that detects text of images of natural scenes and extracts them independently of the orientation. All existing methods are designed to operate under a certain constraint, such as detecting text in only one direction. The extremely extreme stable region detector (MSER) is chosen to extract binary regions, as it has proven to be robust to lighting conditions. An improvement technique for MSER images is designed to obtain clear letter boundaries. Images are sent to a Walkthrough Detector and various heuristics are applied to remove non-text pixels. Subsequently, the detected text regions are entered into an Optical Character Recognition module and then filtered according to their confidence measure. Character recognition is not part of the algorithm and the results only refer to text detection.
