Echo is the repetition of a waveform due to reflection from points where the characteristics of the medium through which the wave propagates changes. Echo is usefully used in sonar and radar for detection and exploration purposes. In telecommunications, echo can degrade service quality, and echo cancellation is an important part of communication systems. The development of echo reduction began in the late 1950s, and continues today as new integrated landline and wireless cell networks put the additional requirement on the performance of eco cancellers. There are two types of echoes in communication systems: acoustic echo and hybrid telephone line. The acoustic echo results from a feedback path configured between the speaker and the microphone in a mobile phone, hands-free phone, teleconferencing or headset system. Acoustic echo can be reflected on a multitude of different surfaces, such as walls, ceilings and floors, and travels along different paths. The echoes of the telephone line result from a mismatch of impedance in telephone exchange hybrids where the 2-wire subscriber line is connected to a 4-wire line. The perceptual effects of an echo depend on the time lag between the incident and reflected waves, the strength of the reflected waves and the number of trajectories through which the waves are reflected. Echoes of the telephone line and acoustic feedback echoes in teleconferences and hearing systems are undesirable and annoying and can be disturbing.
