Transient stability analysis is an indispensable part of planning the utility system. The industry standard for transient stability assessment varies from region to region, but in a broader sense requires the system to withstand severe disturbances. From the beginning and the identification of the stability problem in the multi-machine power system, the numerical method of the iterative solution of the differential and algebraic equations system has been the conventional solution for stability analysis. Taking advantage of the characteristics of digital computing, several direct methods of stability analysis were developed successively. The function of energy-based stability assessment methods, has been a milestone in the evaluation of the stability of the multi-machine power system. This paper deals with the stability analysis of a multi-machine power system that uses single machine power functions and group of machines. The simulations carried out reaffirm the concept of critical machines in the stability analysis. The use of energy functions has been revised to determine critical (fault) compensation time, an important parameter in the design of circuit breakers and other protective equipment. Energy systems around the world are being transformed into complex entities with the introduction of several fast controllers like FACTS. Stability analysis incorporating one of the FACTS - SVC devices is the need of the hour.
