A set of signature samples is collected from individuals and these signature samples are scanned in a grayscale scanner. These images of scanned signatures are then subjected to a series of image improvement operations such as binarisation, complementation, filtering, thinning and edge detection. From these preprocessed signatures, characteristics such as centroid, center of gravity, calculation of the number of loops, horizontal and vertical profile and normalized area are extracted and stored in a separate database. The values of the database are sent to the support vector machine that draws a hyperplane and classifies the signature as original or forged based on a particular characteristic value. The developed SVM is tested successfully against 336 signature samples and the classification error rate is less than 7.16% and this is convincing.
