Information security is not a technical problem; It is a matter of management. It is based on three fundamental pillars: critical infrastructure, organization and technology. While critical infrastructures are beyond the direct control of the organization, balancing them is a critical component of corporate governance. Total safety is not technically feasible or operationally feasible. Therefore, the organization must determine what information assets should be protected and the degree of protection that must be provided. As Internet-based commerce spreads across society, there will be a decrease in customer tolerance for losses arising from perceived or actual cyber vulnerabilities. Only top management can initiate plans and policies that address different aspects of security in a balanced and integrated manner. Leaving security mainly to the IT function will only reinforce one of the cornerstones, ie the technology, and will not produce the expected results. Safety failures are management failures rather than technical failures. This article presents an organizational security approach that top managers can use as a guide to initiating security plans and policies and auditing their implementation.
