The Mahindra Scorpio is a four-wheeled SUV manufactured by Mahindra & Mahindra Limited (M & M), the flagship company of the Indian group Mahindra. It was the company's first SUV built for the global market. The Scorpio has been successfully accepted in international markets around the world.

The Scorpio was conceptualized and designed by M & M's integrated design and manufacturing team. The car has been awarded three prestigious Indian awards: the "Car of the Year" award from Business Standard Motoring, as well as the "Best SUV of the Year "and" Best Car of the Year ", both from BBC World Wheels.

Before the mid-1990s, Mahindra & Mahindra was an automobile assembly company. The company manufactured Willys Jeeps and its modified minor versions, with modifications carried out in India. In 1996, the company planned to incorporate the SUV segment with a new product that could compete globally. Since M & M did not have the technical knowledge to handle such an ambitious product, it devised a completely new concept among Indian automobile companies. By rotating new executives who had worked in the automotive industry in Western countries such as Pawan Goenka and Alan Durante, the company broke the rule that car manufacturers must design, design and test their own vehicles while spending millions of dollars on process.

The new Mahindra Scorpio SUV had all of its major systems designed directly by suppliers, with Mahindra's only inputs being the design, performance specifications and cost of the program. Design and engineering of systems were performed by suppliers, as well as testing, validation and selection of materials. Suppliers also selected sourcing and engineering locations. The parts were later assembled at a Mahindra plant under the Mahindra Badge, being a well-known mark in India. Using this method, the company was able to build from scratch a new vehicle with a percentage of practically 100 percent suppliers, from concept to reality, at a cost of Rs 600 crore ($ 120 million), including improvements to plant. The project took five years to move from concept to final product. The cost was estimated in 2002 at Rs 550 crore.
