The development of a fully automated energy meter that has capabilities like remote monitoring and meter control power will lead to transparency in the energy meter reading and billing system. The automatic meter reading system (AMR) will continuously monitor the power meter and send data to a server of the service provider through wireless communication where the data will also be stored. Later details of the invoice will be sent to the customer via SMS. It saves a lot of human work. Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) technology is used to communicate between the service provider and the customer. This system avoids human intervention in energy management. If the customer does not pay the invoice on time, the user is informed through the SMS system via GSM. If even the customer does not pay the invoice then according to the designed late consideration, an alert message will then be sent automatically the power connection is disconnected from the remote server. This developed system provides efficient monitoring of meter reading power, power control mechanism, prevents billing error and also reduces maintenance cost.
The energy meter is designed to read the electrical energy consumed in units and in rupees to display on an LCD screen to the user. This data is also provided to the electrical department using GSM technology for billing purposes. Due to the high cost of electricity these days it is necessary for the consumer to know how much electricity is consumed to control the electricity bill within their budget. In this proposed system, the consumer will obtain their energy consumption data in real time on an LCD. The same data is sent via the GSM modem to the electricity department via SMS. An 8051 family microcontroller is connected to the power meter to get Watt Hour pulses. The microcontroller then processes these pulses according to the program written on it, to calculate the units consumed and the cost involved. It also gives the command to the GSM modem loaded SIM to send the data to the electricity department via SMS. In addition this project can be enhanced to control remote electrical appliances via SMS. In addition, the electricity department can send the invoice amount through SMS to the receiving unit to obtain information from the consumer.
