What is GSM ?
Global System for Mobile (GSM) is a second generation cellular standard developed to cater voice services and data delivery using digital modulation
GSM: History
• Developed by Group Spéciale Mobile (founded 1982) which was an initiative of CEPT ( Conference of European Post and Telecommunication )
• Aim : to replace the incompatible analog system
• Presently the responsibility of GSM standardization resides with special mobile group under ETSI ( European telecommunication Standards Institute )
Full set of specifications phase-I became available in 1990
• Under ETSI, GSM is named as “ Global System for Mobile communication “
• Today many providers all over the world use GSM (more than 135
countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia, America)
• More than 1300 million subscribers in world and 45 million subscriber in India.
GSM Services
Tele-services
Bearer or Data Services
Supplementary services
Tele Services
Telecommunication services that enable voice communication
via mobile phones
• Offered services
- Mobile telephony
- Emergency calling
Bearer Services
Include various data services for information transfer between GSM and other networks like PSTN, ISDN etc at rates from 300 to 9600 bps
Short Message Service (SMS) up to 160 character alphanumeric data transmission to/from the mobile terminal
Voice mailbox
Electronic mail
Supplementary Services
Call related services :
Call Waiting- Notification of an incoming call while on the handset
Call Hold- Put a caller on hold to take another call
Call Barring- All calls, outgoing calls, or incoming calls
Call Forwarding- Calls can be sent to various numbers defined by the user
Multi Party Call Conferencing - Link multiple calls together
CLIP – Caller line identification presentation
CLIR – Caller line identification restriction
CUG – Closed user group
GSM System Architecture-I
Mobile Station (MS)
Mobile Equipment (ME)
Subscriber Identity Module (SIM)
Base Station Subsystem (BSS)
Base Transceiver Station (BTS)
Base Station Controller (BSC)
Network Switching Subsystem(NSS)
Mobile Switching Center (MSC)
Home Location Register (HLR)
Visitor Location Register (VLR)
Authentication Center (AUC)
Equipment Identity Register (EIR)
System ArchitectureMobile Station (MS)
The Mobile Station is made up of two entities:
Mobile Equipment (ME)
2. Subscriber Identity Module (SIM)
Mobile Equipment
Portable, vehicle mounted, hand held device Uniquely identified by an IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity)
Voice and data transmission
Monitoring power and signal quality of surrounding cells for optimum handover
Power level : 0.8W – 20 W
160 character long SMS.
Subscriber Identity Module (SIM)
Smart card contains the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI)
Allows user to send and receive calls and receive other subscribed services
Encoded network identification details
Key Ki,Kc and A3,A5 and A8 algorithms
Protected by a password or PIN
Can be moved from phone to phone – contains key information to activate the phone

Introduction
GSM services are a standard collection of applications and features available to mobile phone subscribers all over the world.
Accessing a GSM Network
A subscription with a mobile phone operator.
A mobile phone which is GSM compliant and operates at the same frequency as the operator.
A SIM(Subscriber’s Identification Module) is required which is issued by the operator.
About SIM Card
SIM Card contains phone’s identity and what services they are allowed, in a SIM record in the Home Location Register.
Each geographic area has a database called the Visitors Location Register (VLR) which contains details of all local mobiles identified by their SIM Cards.
Voice calls
How outgoing calls are made from a mobile
How incoming calls are made to a mobile
How incoming calls are made to a mobile
Contact the Gateway MSC
Determine how to route the call
Ringing the phone
Speech Encoding during Calls.
The speech codec used in GSM are
Half Rate (HR)
Full Rate (FR)
Enhanced Full Rate (EFR)
Adaptive Multi Rate (AMR)
All codec except AMR operate with a fixed data rate and error correction level.
Call Routing
HLR is queried to determine whether the call should be routed directly to the number or other number.
If the call to be directed to another number the HLR is updated.
If the mobile is not currently associated with a VLR then HLR returns a number called Call Forward Not Reachable (CFNR) to the Gateway MSC.
Data Transmission
Circuit-switched data protocols
General Packet Radio Service(GPRS)
Short message service (SMS)
Supplemenlatary services
Call Forwarding
Barring of Outgoing Calls
Barring of Incoming Calls.
Advice of Charge
Call Hold
Call Waiting

INTRODUCTION
GSM (global system for mobile communications): this is a standard cellular communication.
The use of the GSM network, you can monitor and control appliances and other deviceslocally with a built-in peripheral input and output devices. Remote system allows theuser to effectively control and manage the House/Office equipment and equipmentvia mobile phone, sending a command as a DTMF tone.Mainconcept for a project receives a call and fix the DTMF tone and processingit continue to perform multiple operations. The type of operation to beperformed depends on the key principle of the project is isfairly simple. First, the DTMF signal is sent via a mobile keyboard, and then he isdecoded through a decoder and sent to interim equipment, we havedesigned the team received in the form of DTMF tones.
DTMF signal is sent from the mobile set, which contains the command DTMF formwhich is then processed accordingly perform requested task
WHY DOES GSM?
Since GSM is one of the most used communication networks to date. Almostevery person has a mobile station these days, which are used as terminals for thevoice calls, they can also be used for many other applications. Now, if we use it to manage remote appliances, it will be very beneficial for two reasons.
Wireless remote control for home appliances are costly, as well as its alsodifficult for any man to hold a lot of remote controls.
Now, if we use only a single cell to communicate with many devicesand voice calls and.The user shall be one Mobile.
Mobile stations are included with lots of features, so why not add a fewmore
