The operation of the piston motor can best be understood by comparing it with a simple barrel. The gunpowder turns on. Gunpowder burns very quickly and when burned there is a rapid expansion of the resulting gases. This rapid expansion causes a tremendous increase in the pressure that forces the cannon ball.
Now the barrel of the barrel has been replaced by a cylinder and a combustion chamber. The barrel has been replaced by a piston. A mixture of vaporized fuel and air has replaced gunpowder.
