In case of charging by connecting a d.c. Generator, the induction motor is connected to a generator. The generator is charged by a lamp bank. Therefore, an induction motor is charged. On the side of the induction motor, the ammeter reads the line current and the voltmeter reads the line voltage VL. The two wattmeters are connected according to the method of two wattmeters therefore:
Pin = Power input = W1 + W2
On the generator side, the ammeter reads the charging current and the voltmeter reads the terminal voltage Vt.
By varying the lamp bank, the load of the generator can be varied, ie the load on the induction motor. The induction motor can be star or delta connected and can be squirrel cage or sliding ring type. Speed readings are taken with a tachometer. The load is increased until the induction motor has nominal line current.
