Hydraulic hammers are forged mechanical hammers that use a non-muscular energy source to raise the preparatory hammer to hit and accelerate it in the work being hammered. It is also called "Forge hammers with open power". They have been used by blacksmiths, cutlers, metallurgists and manufacturers since the late 1880s, after having replaced travel hammers.
