Electromagnetic brakes (also called electromechanical brakes or EM brakes) slow down or stop movement using electromagnetic force to apply mechanical resistance (friction). The original name was "electromechanical brakes", but over the years the name changed to "electromagnetic brakes", in reference to its method of action. Since becoming popular in the mid-twentieth century, especially in trains and trams, the variety of applications and designs of brakes has increased dramatically, but the basic operation remains the same. Both electromagnetic and parasitic current brakes use electromagnetic force, but electromagnetic brakes ultimately depend on friction and parasitic current brakes use magnetic force directly.
