Basically cycloconverters are AC to AC converters and are used to vary the frequency of a supply at a desired load frequency. These are naturally switched direct frequency converters that use naturally switched thyristors. These are mainly used in high power applications of up to tens of megawatts for frequency reduction.
The main forms of electrical energy commonly available are in constant DC (direct current) and constant AC (alternating current). However, for different applications, the different forms of these two energies are used. For this purpose of conversion, several converters are used as inverters, rectifiers, choppers and cycloconverters. Cycloconverters can, in fact, transfer AC power from a fixed frequency to the AC power of a different frequency.
