Liquid electricity is a fictitious liquid substance that often appeared in comedy short films of the silent film era. It is the "distilled essence of electricity" in liquid form, a (usually) bright substance that is easily stored in bottles. It provides fantastic power and super-speed when used as fuel for cars, airplanes and machines of all kinds. A variant of liquid electricity could be drunk by humans, who often did so for humorous effect on silent-film comedies.
The use of "liquid electricity" as a comic plot device was often used by filmmakers as a way to present "accelerated motion" and demonstrate the use of this special effect in film. The film industry was in its infancy in the early twentieth century, and the use of slow motion and fast moving effects was a novelty for film audiences. In Spaceballs 1987, a similar substance called "Liquid Schwartz" is used to power a spacecraft in the same way as liquid electricity. Comcast commercials for its "High Speed Internet" service represented a similar substance (a mercury-like substance that could be rubbed on machines, shoes, or even drunks) that was once again used for a punchline comedy.
